Essential Packing Tips

Start Packing Early

Begin packing a few weeks before your move, if possible. Starting early gives you time to sort through your belongings, donate or discard items you no longer need, and avoid a last-minute rush.

A few helpful reminders:

• Pack items you don't use every day first.
• Label boxes by room and contents.
• Keep important documents and essentials separate.
• Measure and plan for large or specialty items.
• Return rented cable, internet, or other equipment before moving.
• Set aside a box or bag with the essentials you'll need immediately after the move.

A little preparation ahead of time can make moving day much easier to manage.

Use Quality Supplies

Use sturdy boxes, quality packing tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, and other protective materials appropriate for the items you're packing. Proper supplies can help protect your belongings and make the packing process more organized.

Moving supplies are available at many local retailers, including Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowe's, where you can find boxes and specialty packing materials in a variety of sizes.

For fragile or valuable items, consider professional packing services to help ensure they are properly prepared for transportation.

Label Every Box Clearly

Clearly label each box with its contents and the room where it belongs. This makes it easier to organize the truck, locate important items, and unpack efficiently.

For best visibility, label the top and at least one side of each box. Use large, easy-to-read labels and consider marking boxes containing fragile items or items that should be unpacked first.

Pack One Room at a Time

Focus on one room at a time to stay organized and keep track of what has been packed and what still needs attention.

For soft, lightweight items such as pillows, stuffed animals, blankets, and comforters, clean, heavy-duty bags can be a practical alternative to using boxes. Label each bag clearly and make sure it is securely closed.

Tip: Avoid using ordinary trash bags for valuable or delicate items, and clearly identify bags containing belongings so they aren't accidentally discarded.

Protect Fragile Items

Wrap fragile items individually with bubble wrap, packing paper, or clean towels, and place them in sturdy boxes with appropriate cushioning to help prevent movement and damage during transportation.

Packing paper is an excellent option for wrapping dishes, glassware, and other delicate household items.

Avoid using newspaper directly against light-colored or delicate surfaces, as ink can transfer and leave stains. Use plain packing paper instead.

Tip: Don't overpack fragile-item boxes. Fill empty spaces with appropriate cushioning, close the box securely, and clearly label it FRAGILE.

Pack an Essentials Box

Prepare a separate essentials box or bag with the items you'll need immediately after arriving at your new home.

Consider including:

• Toiletries and medications
• A change of clothes
• Phone and device chargers
• Important documents
• Basic cleaning supplies
• Towels and toilet paper
• Basic kitchen items
• Snacks and bottled water
• Any other items you'll need during your first night

Keep your essentials with you rather than buried in the moving truck whenever possible.
